At the Battle of the Bulge, in December, 1944, he was taken prisoner after volunteering to stay behind with the wounded men. He received the Bronze Star, Combat Medical Badge, and Army Commendation Medal for his service during the War.
After his liberation from the camps, he returned to Arkansas and married his high school sweetheart, Margie. They raised seven children: four sons and three daughters.
After the war, he re-enlisted in the Army and worked as a special services officer. After retirement from the army, he enjoyed careers as a golf pro, a farmer and with the Hope Public Schools.
He was a faithful member of Unity Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. He was also a Gideon and a Mason.
